'Once in a while' (two words) is correct.
A system is environmentally unsustainable if it can't remain healthy and productive over time. For a grossly oversimplified example, say my system is to take rocks out of a barrel. Every day, I take a rock out. Eventually, the barrel will be empty, and my system will collapse. But say my system is to scoop some water out of a barrel, and that barrel collects rainwater. Every day, I scoop some water out, and every once in a while, rain adds water to the barrel. It's entirely possible to do this forever, without ever empying the barrel. That system would be sustainable; the rock system would be unsustainable.

They'll eat most bugs, so I'll say Insectivore. But they will also eat pinky mice every once in awhile.

"Everything in moderation, I say - even excess! You can splurge every once in a while."
There are two different uses:The one-word form, awhile, is an adverb. It modifies a verb such as stay awhile, rest awhile, or sit awhile. It cannot be used as the object of a preposition, such as for.The two-word form is a while, where while is a noun, meaning an unspecified period of time. So you could similarly say stay for a while, or that you will be gone for a while. So the distinction is that you use awhile with verbs and "a while" in prepositional phrases.

Well, I would say to use it at least once a day. Or, maybe once every two days. If you only use it once in a while, there's no point...
