Why did you put a painting in your essay? If you are referring in your essay to a painting done by another person, you should underline the title of that painting, and you should use a resource like the MLA manual for similar questions.

Italics as well as underlining the title are acceptable. Do what you personally feel, if the title is being worked into an essay I use italics simply because I think underlining brings too much attention to the title and less attention to the content surrounding the title.

YES!!Punctuating Titles of Works of ArtCreating a work of art is an enormous task, isn't it? For that reason, you can think of art as a big accomplishment. Okay, that might sound corny, but it will help you remember! Individual works of art like paintings and sculptures are underlined or italicized:
  • Michelangelo's David
  • Mona Lisa
  • The Last Supper
  • The Pieta

Note: A photograph, which is much smaller than a work of art, is placed in quotation marks!

You would either underline it or put it into italics.

According to this place, you underline. I couldn't find any information anywhere else, but I think underlining seems to be a safe bet. http://faculty.genesee.edu/nrgayford/mla_examples.htm

Underlining and italics are pretty much the same thing, but the MLA Stylebook recommends underlining.
