There are a number of villages and places called Presles in France. The name seems to come from Latin either for meadow or another rurral setting, but the meaning is obscure today.

The common plant "presle", commonly spelled "prêle" and called "queue de rat /queue de renard / queue de cheval" (rat / fox or horse tail) is called Field Horsetail, or Common Horsetail, in English. The scientific name is Equisetum arvense.
