It comes from the Sanskrit jangala which originally referred to waste, uncultivated ground. The meaning later changed to waste ground covered in shrubs, trees or long grass. Still later, the Anglo-Indian word came to mean an area covered in wild growth or a forest.

"Jungle" was borrowed into the English language from the Hindi word "jangal" in 1776. They had borrowed it from the Sanskrit.
