he became a saint
If you mean, "How did Saint Benedict go to heaven?" then the answer would have to be that he had faith and believed in God, he lived a just and holy life. and he died in God's friendship, hence he went to Heaven. But, if you are asking, "When and under what circumstances was St. Benedict canonized (officially declared to be a Saint)?" the simple answer is that he was never canonized. Early Saints--Saints recognized as such before about 1200 AD--were not canonized as we understand it today.
Today, the Pope or his delegates conduct an investigation as to the apparent sanctity of the candidate, and then the Pope decides if the candidate is to be honored as a Saint. (This is greatly simplified, believe me.) In St. Benedict's time, the people-at-large decided that a dead person ought to be honored as a Saint, and after a while it became commonly accepted that he or she was a Saint, and it was usually confirmed by the local bishop--though some Saints are so early, they seem to always have been accepted universally as Saints, as for instance the Virgin Mary, the Apostles, St. John the Baptist, etc.. In the case of St. Benedict of Nursia, and many others, including St Patrick, St. Jerome, St. Augustine of Hippo, and so forth, the people's choice was ratified or at least accepted by one or more local bishops. The technical name for this is the Latin, Vox Populi Vox Dei, meaning, "The voice of the people is the voice of God." There is a discussion of this in the Article on Beatification and Canonization in the Catholic Encyclopedia, if you are interested. It's online at
