How do vowels and consonants differ?

A consonant on its own cannot form a complete syllable. Any syllable must contain contain a vowel or a combination of vowels). Consonants can be added to the beginning or end of a syllable to modify its sound.

Ie. O can be considered a syllable, but so can MO and MOCK.

The biggest difference between a consonant in a vowel is that the vowels can be pronounced properly by themselves, while consonants cannot. For example, when pronouncing the consonant "D" by itself, an "uh" sound is appended to the end of it. Additionally, the vowels are necessity in polysyllabic words as there is no way to pronounce a continuous string of consonants without the aid of vowels.
