I'm not entirely sure, but I think the main criteria is themes, characters, style the type of beginning (e.g a plunge form) and the type of end. There may be more things to write about, depending on what genre or author you have.
I am actually working on an essay comparing two short stories as we speak. I starting mine...Based on the short stories of "Title" by Author, and "Title" by Author, There are many similaries, and many differences. Hope that helps:)
