Break longer sentences into two or three complete thoughts. Be willing to add words to the sentence beginnings to make the thought stand on its own. Be willing to reword your thoughts.

Original: When my family went on vacation, mom packed two suitcases each for the children, Bobby, Mike, Sue, and Sally, so with my parents' belongings we had ten suitcases! Mom said that next time, we couldn't pack so many toys and games. She wanted no more than six suitcases.

Rewrite: When my family went on vacation, we had ten suitcases. Each of the four children had two suitcases. My parents' belongings added another two bags. Mom said that next time, each child could only pack one toy and one game. The next year, each person had only one suitcase.

You should also watch for passive verbs (is, are, was, were), and phrases beginning with "by".

Example passive: The ball was kicked by the boy, after it was thrown to him by his friend.

Example active: The boy kicked the ball after his friend threw it to him. (much shorter)

Notice that using active verbs (kicked, threw, jumped, wrote, sang) make shorter sentences.
