Apprise means to tell someone, to give information. It is cousin to appraise, to give specific information about something. Apprise generally is used in connection to "official" information.

"John will apprise Mary of her right to an attorney."

"The teacher apprises the student that he must do homework."

The words, while similar in spelling, are very different in meaning. In particular, many familiar only with the word appraise will use it incorrectly to mean apprise.
