In its basic meaning, a dark horse is an unlikely winner of a competition of some kind. It refers to a person, and the image is taken from racing--a (nondescript?) contestant suddenly coming up from behind and crossing the finish line, seemingly from nowhere: "A dark horse candidate won the election"; "The recipient of the prize was a dark horse."
