The door represents the lack of communication between Ann and John. The harsh storm and the crackling fire describe her feelings for John and Steven. With Steven the fire comes up often, and when thinking about John, the bleak and intense storm is often mentioned. The cars/game of cards represents Ann's longing desire to dance with Steven. She has contemplated and compared Steven and John for the past seven years, thus she finally has the opportunity and takes it. The cards also symbolize John knowing that Ann and Steven will do more than play cards, hence why he sends Steven over to keep his wife company. Though the short story describes the setting as a dull unimportant asset/life, the audience is more than intrigued
