Fay is a brilliant book with almost too many details at certain points, but the book urges the reader to keep going and find out what happens. As you may know (if you read any of the book) Fay miscarries her child and falls quickly out of love with Aaron, the bouncer at the strip club. She decides to finally find her way back to Sam (the police officer she was in love with and impregnated by), but by the time she calls him to come get her at Aaron's mother's bed and breakfast where she is staying, Aaron comes home while she is waiting for Sam to get her and catches onto her plan of escape. He becomes frustrated and violent with her and she ends up shooting him a few times in defense and departing quickly. Aaron is sitting against the wall bleeding and dazed when Sam shows up to get Fay, but she is not there. Aaron, who had been hiding a gun behind his knee, shoots at Sam and the story ends with Sam bleeding profusely in the back of an ambulance. It is presumed that both Aaron and Sam were killed. The epilogue only consists of a pretty woman (obviously meant to be Fay) walking along the streets of New Orleans smiling at the people on the streets around her and eventually walking into a adult lounge. To be honest, I was a little frustrated with this ending. I had been hoping through the whole book that Fay and Sam would find their way back to each other and live happily ever after, but this book is more realistic than that. I think she simply moves on to new pastures, but most likely continues to find trouble in her future.
