The narrator of this story is a 12 year old girl and she is from China. Her family is struggling in America so her mom AND dad have to work. She is ashamed of this because she wants to be rich and live the high life like her piano teacher, Mis Crosman. She wants a white umbrella she sees in the corner of the room and Miss Crosman gives it to her. she then says, "I wish you were my mother." and feels sad. On her way home, her, her sister and her mother get into a car accident and she realizes she loves her mom so much. The narrator goes to a sewer and dumps the umbrella down into it. (the umbrella was a symbol of rejection towards her mother)

The narrator felt like it would disappoint her mom and she didn't want to have to wait for her and her sister. Plus she wanted miss. Crossman to think she would be there any minute even though she knew she wouldn't be.
