2 syllables are in the word style

SY-LE

1 2

From a first grade teacher our Lang.Arts programs explains it this way, the number of vowels in a word will tell you the number of syllables. Dont forget the spelling of long vowels such as the long A spelling in plain is ai which counts as one vowel.

I agree style counts as 2 the y is the long I spelling and eventhough the e is silent it still counts.

STYLE has but one syllable for the same reason that MILE, PILE, and WHILE also only have one--the sound of the word is not broken nor changed when said. If STYLE were pronounced as STY+LE, i.e. as in in "pig sty" and the French word "le" then it would have two syllables as it would have two distinct sounds. In the end long, short, or silent vowels don't matter, and, though it's a good guideline, the number of vowels dictating the number of syllables is not a hard and fast rule: AMAZE has three vowels but just two syllables. To make it easy just look in the dictionary; most, if not all, list the headword separated into syllables (usually with a bullet, i.e. "•") as in "a•maz•ing" or "hip•po•pot•a•mus".

The syllable count of words will sometimes vary depending on your pronunciation of words. Officially, according to dictionaries, the word "style" has one syllable.
