he was murdered by a unicorn sent by Medusa while riding a cyclopse.

Theseus cursed him with one of the three curses that Poseidon gave hime. A bull came out of the sea and rammed Hippolytus' carriage into the rocks and Hippolytus was dragged by his horses. The injuries sustained from this ended up killing him.

Why did Phaedra commit suicide?

The main reason given is that she killed herself, because she had fallen in love with Hippolytus, but he rejected her. She told Theseus (Hippolytus' father) that Hippolytus had raped her, and he gets cursed by Theseus, ultimately dying at his hand. Phaedra then kills herself in grief, not intending him to have been killed. Another version states that she does not kill herself (hence doesn't die in the myth) but instead Hippolytus is killed by Dionysus.

How did Hippolytus perish?

The most common legend regarding Hippolytus states that he was killed after rejecting the advances of Phaedra, his stepmother, the second wife of Theseus. Spurned, Phaedra deceived Theseus saying that his son had raped her. Theseus, furious, used one of the three wishes given to him by Poseidon to curse Hippolytus. Poseidon sent a sea-monster-or, alternatively, Dionysus sent a wild bull-to terrorize Hippolytus's horses, who dragged their rider to his death.
