WARNING: Spoiler belowAt the end of the book Peter, Creighton, and General Arnold go to St. Marks (an island) to rescue General Washington. General Arnold tricks the British guards into letting him in the prison and bringing Creighton along to the cell where they believe General Washington is being kept. One British soldier realizes that they are Patriots and locks both of them in the cell with Washington. As they are being put in the cell, they discover that the man in the cell is really Creighton's father, not Washington. The real Washington was hanged a while ago. They manage to break out of the cell, (with the help of Peter) but Creighton is shot in the leg (not mortally). They escape the island and head back to New Orleans after dropping off Arnold at Pensacola.
