The lodgers were naturally clean and organized, which seemed to benefit Gregor's family having be that Gregor was messy and dirty. Although the lodgers did not literally replace Gregor, they had seemed to replace his functions and "significance" to the family such as bringing in money which is now brought in by the lodgers rent as well as a clean and prestige living space due to their nature knack for order.

Gregor's father sends them away however, for their purpose is no longer required (to balance Gregors messy and dirty living style)
