Contrary to widely-held belief, the form is a matter of personal preference.

There are two accepted forms for possessive singular nouns ending in s:

Add an apostrophe (') after the existing s at the end of the word: James' and Chris'

Add an apostrophe s ('s) after the existing s at the end of the word: James's and Chris's

Examples:

James' essay won first prize and Chris' essay came in second.

James's essay won first prize and Chris's essay came in second.

Note: If you are a student, use the form that is preferred by your teacher.
