They see negative sides of almost everything around them, contrary to optimists, who see brighter side of the same. The best way to explain this is with "Glass of water" theory in which optimist see it as halfway full, and pessimist as halfway empty. There are also realists, who see most of the things as they really are, without too much negative or positive, but people that can be really called realists are quite rare, as it takes healthy mind and a lot of intelligence to be one, which means one must not be influenced by anything except for solid facts when he makes his mind up about something.
