Chasing Yesterday: Awakening is about a girl, nicknamed Jane, yet results in calling herself J.D., is taken from the scene of a terrible explosion. No survivors are found besides her, and she is rushed to the hospital. It turns out she is facing amnesia and cannot remember anything before waking up from the explosion. The doctors figure out they can't do anything more and send her to an Institute for 'run-aways' and orphans. There, she meets Daniel, a kind boy whose parents are no longer with him. She also meets Mel, a bully who tried to stab her in a playground scuffle. J.D. then appears to make her fly a few feet back, causing Mel to get a concussion. Surprisingly, J.D. didn't even land a single blow on the girl. About a day later, she has grown closer to Daniel, thinking he is the only one who understands and knows her best. Everything goes wrong though, her so called 'mother' comes and picks her up from the Institute, even though J.D. doesn't even see a single resemblance to her. She is supposedly called Alexa Collins, but still wants to be called J.D. not feeling like she is girl she is. Her mother plans sessions with a therapist, Dr. Styron yet it seems a bit suspicious to J.D. In each session, she is supposed to just fall into a trance. After that, she is supposed to slowly regain her memories. After a few times in therapy, she slowly regains fragments of her memories, one includes a Christmas with her mother. Yet, when she asks to see one of the sessions that was recorded on camera, she is kindly denied, this confuses her. J.D. is also having terrible nightmares about a man, with a bushy mustache and grey hair, which looks exactly like the therapist. Buildings fall and helicopters crash in her dreams, with a man slowly controlling her while she is in a blissful state. Another dream also consists of J.D. seeing the same man pass out pills to girls, when one girl refuses he pulls out something sharp and all is heard is a scream. She results in her emailing Daniel and asking him to come at the alley late at night. As he comes, she then blurts out exactly what happened and how confused she truly is. He says he has a plan, on how to see the therapist's video. In the next therapy appointment, Daniel is seen in the lobby, pretending to have a seizure, with allows J.D. to sneak in and see the videos while Dr. Styron hurries to the lobby. She fast forwards to the part where J.D. is put under a trance, then, horrified, she sees the doctor pull out a needle and inject J.D. with a foul, green fluid. Then he begins telling her false memories in how she loves her mother and fake Christmas's she has had. She suddenly sees her fake mother look at her in the doorway. The woman says it was 'easier that way' and then shoots J.D. with a tranquilizer gun. When she awakens, she is found in the back of the truck. Her fake mother comes by and tells her that she will be taking J.D. to a distant place, and that she is too dangerous to stay out like this. Daniel however comes to the rescue, shoving the woman aside and allowing J.D. to escape, the two run into a ragged, empty barn where the woman comes, threatening to kill Daniel and J.D. both. Against all odds, they get away after an extreme battle which results in the barn catching aflame and exploding. It is unclear whether the woman died or not, but J.D. and Daniel make it out safetly.
