The setting of Thirteen Reasons Why is an unnamed town in California sometime in 2000s (believed to be San Luis because author Jay Asher says that the book is based on the (real) California city where he grew up: San Luis.) the Crestmont Theater and Monet's Café are real places in the city of San Luis and are based on the real thing.
