It is arguable that one of the characters was based on Judy Garland, who was associated with the production on and off ( movie version) but backed out when she saw through the script that one of the characters was based on JG. The novel is said to have popularized the slang usage of ( Funny Farm) for a Mental hospital. Nut House, Funny House, etc are far older. Funny Farm was given a shot in the arm by Jaqueline Susann. it is not known which character was (Funny Farm) material- the phrase was tossed about by a producer or director of the sarcastic variety- some of you girls are going to wind up in the Funny Farm! Drug abuse ( as one might guess) figured in the narrative- En Plus! ( to the max)
