Oh Lord, here in the Deep South we have more slang and idioms that you can shake a stick at! We are very big on speech-ifying down here, and we love fancy talk and flowery speech. Here are some other good examples of sayings you'll here in the South:

  • Bless your heart
  • 'fixing to' meaning it's about to or it's going to, as in 'It's fixing to rain.'
  • Dumber than a box of hair
  • 'You-all' or Y'all to mean several people
  • 'Whoop somebody upside their head' to mean hit them
  • 'beat the tar out of somebody' to mean beat them up
  • adding 'and all' to the end of a phrase to mean 'etc or and so forth,' as in 'How are your folks and all?'
  • fainting spells - when dainty ladies faint at anything shocking
  • don't teach your Grandma to suck eggs
  • 'to eat high on the hog' meaning to eat rich food
  • 'you ain't just whistling Dixie' meaning you have a very good point
  • mad enough to chew nails and spit bullets
  • mad as a wet hen
  • 'barking up the wrong tree' meaning you have the wrong idea
  • "Oh, go on!' meaning "You're joking!"
  • 'aim to' meaning to plan to, as in 'I aim to marry that gal.'
  • 'to reckon' meaning to suppose, meaning 'I reckon that's the right answer.'
