To remember A Simile, just remember that if you see "AS ___ AS ___" then it is A-Simile (notice the capital letters in AS to remind you of the AS in A Simile).

You'd just make some comparisons between earthquakes and something else, like "as shaken as James Bond's martini" or "as rough as a storm on the Pacific."

Some significant earthquakes in recent times include the following:

  • 2011/03/11 - Near the East Coast of Honshu, Japan - Magnitude 9.0
  • 2004/12/26 - Off West Coast of Northern Sumatra - Magnitude 9.1
  • 1964/03/28 - Prince William Sound, Alaska - Magnitude 9.2
  • 1960/05/22 - Chile - Magnitude 9.5

The largest earthquake since 1900 was in Chile in 1960 with a magnitude of 9.5.

These and many others can be found in the NEIC lists by year, country, etc. in related links below.

The USGS National Earthquake Information Center (NEIC) keeps track of earthquakes world-wide and makes available statistics and lists of those earthquakes from a public web site.
