There are 4 types of sentence structure: simple, complex, compound, and compound-complex.
- Simple - there is only one, independent clause
- Complex - there is an independent clause and at least one dependent clause (a clause that could not be used as a separate sentence as written)
- Compound - there are at least two independent clauses, but no dependent clauses
- Compound-complex - there are at least two independent clauses and at least one additional dependent clause
Examples:
The boy has a dog. (simple)
The boy has a dog that likes to dig holes. (complex)
The boy has a dog, but his sister has a cat. (compound)
The boy has a dog that likes to dig holes, and his sister's cat likes to fill them in. (compound-complex)
