The term "sentence structure" refers to the clauses in the sentence.

There are 4 types of sentence structure: simple, complex, compound, and compound-complex.

  • Simple - there is only one, independent clause
  • Complex - there is an independent clause and at least one dependent clause (a clause that could not be used as a separate sentence as written)
  • Compound - there are at least two independent clauses, but no dependent clauses
  • Compound-complex - there are at least two independent clauses and at least one additional dependent clause

Examples:

The boy has a dog. (simple)

The boy has a dog that likes to dig holes. (complex)

The boy has a dog, but his sister has a cat. (compound)

The boy has a dog that likes to dig holes, and his sister's cat likes to fill them in. (compound-complex)

Grammarians and other students of English offer different overviews of the language's basic sentence-patterns. Several of the sentence-patterns that would be generally accepted by most, however, are the following: noun - verb; noun - verb - direct object; noun - verb - indirect object; noun - verb - adverb.
