There are three types of compound words:

- Closed form, such as notebook or keyboard, where two or more separate words are joined together to create a new word.

- Hyphenated form, such as six-pack, or son-in-law, where a dash joins the words together.

- Open form, such as post office or half sister, where there is a space between the words, but they are considered to be a compound word.

Some compound words start off in one form but then, as time passes, they change to another form. Is it fire fly, fire-fly or firefly? The only way to be sure of a compound word's spelling is to consult a good dictionary.
