Speaking English helps. However, In most cases the English professors that i have spoken with all mention having an English masters level degree in order to be an actual professor.

An in-depth knowledge of a particular area of English would be required, e.g. Shakespeare, works of the Renaissance, contemporary American literatures, etc. This is why a Masters would be a requirement.

***Most English professors will tell you they have a Ph. D. in English, which requires 6-8 more years with the already 4 years of earning your bachelor's degree. It is highly recommended you receive high marks in your grades so you can graduate with honors and have the graduate school of choice. After which they recommend becoming an assistant to a professor for experience. They also recommend that you publish high-quality pieces of literature before applying for the position. The competition is getting increasingly more fierce due to dwindling numbers in the position.
