The word soy has gone through numerous countries.

It originated in China, passed through Japan, the Netherlands, and finally into English.

In fact, soy means soy sauce, or a "sauce for fish, made from soybeans".

It is derived from the Chinese shi-yu (shi"fermented soybeans" + yu "oil"). In Japan, this became shoyu, and later, was pronounced soyu. Dutch traders in Japan, long before the English came, called this sauce soya.

In the 1670s, this turned into saio, and from then became the familiar soy we know today.
