It depends on the time period and country, but overall heralds did a number of jobs, including announcing fighters during a tournament, presiding over ceremonies, functioning as messengers, ambassadors and emissaries, and, of course, handling the registration and display of personal armorial devices. In some countries, they also had the ability to hold their own courts and fine or punish people for using heraldry that was not their own.
