The definition of supporting details is to give more information about the topic and or details or information that backs up an sentence. For example, you might make a 'conclusion' or determination that a book character "was depressed". The supporting details might be that this character:

  • held a picture of the deceased spouse
  • cried all the time
  • withdrew and refused visitors
  • moped around
  • stayed in their room
  • refused to eat.

We often make assumptions or determinations when we read, but we must be able to state why we made these conclusions about a character. An author shows rather than tells a conclusion--we must also show how we make our determinations based on what the author showed--or did not show.

Supporting details are used to explain and support the main idea of a sentence, paragraph, essay, or even story. An idea with no supporting details is just that, an idea. The details make the idea something that is worth looking into or worth pursuing.
