A persona is the character that an author narrates through. Although the author may not have the same viewpoints as the persona, the author will pretend to be writing as a different person. In other words, it is like telling a story while pretending to be someone else.

___
Umm, technically speaking, it's more complicated than that. Haha. Well, a persona isn't some complex notion in your mind, but it's more of a... well, I always thought it was more of a multiple self viewed from different people. For example: As a middle schooler, with my classmates I tend to swear and use much more intended sarcasm *teehee, sarcasm is intended, sorry* and around my mom, I tone it down and more innocent. I use two different personas in front of two different people.
I think what people usually mix up is Persona vs. Multiple Personalities. I think one of the largest differences between the two is that a persona is created on a whim, whereas when someone develops a multiple personality disorder, they are sort of forced to have more than one person speak for them self.
I'm still researching the multiple personalities, but the persona I'm almost completely sure of. XD
It's like your other self.

A 'Persona' is a 'social role', or the role played by an actor. It is how you appear to the world, a mask, of sorts. For example you act differently when you are around different people - you would not act the same as you do with your closest friends, when you are with your parents, or your boss. You act differently, you wear different 'masks', or use different personas.

The word, "persona" is Latin for mask. Persona is also where we got our English word, "person" from. We took persona and used it for person because often times a person will not show who they really are to people, therefore its almost like they are hiding behind a mask which is what "persona" means in Latin.
