LED stands for light emitting diode. A diode conducts electricity in one direction (it also makes DC out of AC currents; a property called rectification, like ordinary diodes). When a current passes through an LED, it emits visible light (red/blue/green etc), infra-red light (in TV remote), ultraviolet light (in fake currency detectors) etc. Visible LEDs often have impurities (like gallium arsenide, for example), which make them glow.

A LED is a Light Emitting Diode. It is an electronic component called a diode that is made so that when the proper amount/type/form of electricity passes through it, it will glow and emit light.
