I actually worked at a 'hot lead' newspaper in the early 70s, and was amazed how fast a story could be 'set'. I also made darn sure I never ever even came close to either a loosely set page or a bin full of either 'p's or 'q's I think both stories are great, so, I don't really care which one's right!
