Esgair is Welsh for 'ridge'. (The name is very similar in other Celtic languages.) Oerfel means 'cold' - in the context of weather. The English town Esher stands on a long ridge ; the name probably coming from the Old Welsh (British) esgair, which is pronounced escer in everyday Welsh. Soften the hard 'c' to an 's' sound - and there you have it !
