"Ever" is an adverb meaning "at any time". "Have you ever climbed a mountain?" asks whether you have climbed a mountain at any time in your life. Its opposite is "never" (=not+ever) which means "not at any time" or "at no time".

Occasionally "never" is misused as an intensive form of "not", particularly by children. ("Did you break this vase?" "I never") "Ever" is also used as a kind of intensifier in the expression "never ever".
