Ghost-written means written by someone that you hired but who does not get any credit as the author. This happens a lot with celebrity autobiographies. The celebrity, or a publisher, hires a ghost-writer. The ghost-writer interviews the celebrity and family and friends of the celebrity and does as much research as is necessary an writes the autobiography based on that material. The celebrity accepts it, the publisher prints the celebrity's name on it as the author and voila, a so-called autobiography.

A Ghostwriter is an author that is not given the main credit for the book. Usually a ghostwriter is used when there are more than one authors. The main author is usually a celebrity or someone that might not otherwise be a good writer. The ghostwriter does the actual writing of the book while the main writer, and the one who is credited on the book, does the research and generally pieces together the book.

Most books written this way are autobiographies or autobiographical tales.

Why did martin Luther king jr write the letter to the editor?

Rev. King wrote the letter as a response to local clergymen penning "A Call To Unity" which was an appeal to move the civil rights movement out of the streets and into the courtroom, to the exclusion of public protest. This letter was one of the few completely original works that MLK, Jr. wrote, and shows his true views on the Movement, unlike most of his other works, which were either heavily plagiarized or ghostwritten.
