Gibbeted means being hung from a gibbet, or gallows-like structure. It was often referred to as being "hung in chains," as from a gibbet. The "chains" could be chain, but mostly were a cage-like affair that was simply close fitting iron framework meant to hold the body together and erect for long term display following execution -- usually by hanging. The display was intended to be a warning to others, lest they also become criminals. Eventually, the word gibbet came to be used both for the hanging frame and for the "chains" or gibbet cage.
