In Superman comics, one of the few things that can defeat Superman is a strange metal called Kryptonite that comes from the planet Krypton. Although the gas krypton exists in air, kryptonite does NOT.

it has no meaning as such, it is simply named for the planet it originates form. Superman's birth-planet Krypton exploded some decades ago, and some of the debris from that explosion found its way to earth. I suppose it could be a contracted form of Krypton and meteorite, or it could be suggesting that it's an element from Krypton, taking the "ite" suffix so that it sounds like a mineral of sorts
