Lexicography is the compiling, writing, and editing of a dictionary. You can look it up in a dictionary thanks to lexicographers like Dr. Samuel Johnson, born on September 18, 1709. Johnson's A Dictionary of the English Language (1755) was the first authoritative and comprehensive English dictionary. Prior to that, most dictionaries were collections of obscure and abstruse words, or glossaries of words in specific fields. Johnson's dictionary included a definition complete with etymology and an example of the term in use. Working mostly on his own, it took him nine years to complete the project. The finished product came as a four-volume set and was prohibitively expensive, costing more to buy one set than Johnson had been paid to write it.

In his own dictionary, Johnson defined "lexicographer" as "a writer of dictionaries; a harmless drudge that busies himself in tracing the original and detailing the signification of words."
