A mettanarrative is basically a narrative that focuses on the grand scheme of things - the bigger picture. It's usually considered problematic when retelling historical events because some people tend to be left out of the story; and it also tends to contain some biases where a certain event is told in one person's point of view with a loser vs. winner theme somewhere in the story. Simply put, it's a large assumption of an event. For example, one could say a mettanarrative is like saying: Neapolitan was the hero of the French Revolution.
