In general it is a spoken presentation of at least a few sentences given by a single person. A comedian or program host may deliver a monologue at some point during a program. Characters in fiction or drama may deliver monologues to fill in details of a story, increase or focus tension, provide comic relief or for one of several other reasons. It can be a story that a character tells the audience for some reason. It is not necesssary that the audience be directly addressed during monologues; they might serve to show the audience something of the inner workings of the speaker's mind or character.
