Many years ago, east was at the top of maps and the idea of sorting out your position usually started with laying the map out in the "right" direction, with the east ( Orient ) at the top. The term has hung around long enough for several generations to wonder what it means.

Orienteering was invented by a Swede, Major Ernst Killander, in 1918. Sometimes called 'cunning running', it combines the physical skills of cross-country running or skiing with the mental skills of route finding. Competitors set off at timed intervals and find their way around a course, using a map and compass, via a number of checkpoints.

∙ 15y agoAccording to Merriam-Webster, it means "to face or turn to the east." However, in hospital/medical language we use the term during an orientation period as a verb, as in, "Kim was orientating to her new position in the emergency department." The Queen's dictionary may not agree, but no one here seems to know that we have been using this word "wrong" for years, so it must now be right.

A MODERN MAP is oriented, or positioned, with north at the top. But, why is it "oriented" that way? Because, in the early days of European exploration, most maps were drawn with east, or the Orient, at the top, because Europeans felt that the Orient was the most important because that's where the money was (spices and silks). Recall that Columbus sailed westward from Spain because he wanted to find a shorter route to … The Orient! (He didn't know there was a whole other continent in the way.)
