Did the independence end the conflict on the island of Ireland?

If you mean the Republic(South) of Ireland, then the answer would be a yes. If you mean Northern Ireland, the answer is a resounding no. Ever since the Troubles started back in the 1960's, and even though it'ended with the Good Friday Agreement of 1998, the divides between Northern Ireland's Irish Catholic and English Protesant populations still create problems, there was a bomb scare in Derry(Londonderry) in May of this year,2011. As long as there are those who want a border, and those who don't, it will always be there, even though people wish it so, there will never truly be a 'united Ireland'. And that's from my grandfather,(I'm Irish.) In Derry City, there is the Bogside Murals from the 1980's, the height of the Troubles. In Belfast, the Falls and Shankill Roads that even today, are not always safe. In Derry, on the Irish Catholic side, there is the statue of the two men reaching across to shake hands, offering peace. Also is the big White sign, it's more like a statue that says,'You Are Now Entering Free Derry.' so it's still pretty bad, from the Irish perspective, anyway. Hope I answered your question!
