Way back in the days when I was growing up in Mississippi we carried our cotton to the gin by wagon drawn by a couple of mules or horses. We would leave the wagon of cotton at the gin and carry the mules/horses to the blacksmith shop and have new shoes put on . Everyone knows what a horseshoe is. The end product was your animal was shod. The process was called shodding.

Shodding means protecting, as with shoes, or the material used to make the "shoes," usually wood or metal.
