An affix added to the end of a word or stem, serving to form a new word or functioning as an inflectional ending, such as -ness in gentleness, -ing in walking, or -s in sits.

The -ly suffix changes a word into an adverb. The adverb modifies verbs, adjectives and other adverbs. quick an adjective modify nouns - a quick horse. quickly modifies a verb - he ran quickly. very modifies an adjective - very green
The suffix 'ly' can be used in three different ways:

Firstly: to show the verb being done in a certain manner

e.g 'slow' becomes 'slowly' (in a slow manner)

and 'random' becomes 'randomly' (in a random manner)

Secondly: to show something which is done over a period of time

e.g 'rarely' and 'yearly' and 'hourly'

Thirdly: it is used to say something is likesomething

e.g 'cowardly' (meaning like a coward) and 'saintly' (meaning like a saint)

Hope i helped!
