What does the abbreviation or acronym OK stand for?

There is some evidence that it stands for "Old Kinderhook", the birthplace of American President Martin Van Buren. This is according to a newspaper report in New York in 1840, at which time "OK" was a campaign slogan for Van Buren.

A number of other theories have been advanced, some of which are that it stands for "oll kurrect", or comes from Jamaican or Surinam Creole. None of these has much going for it and the "oll kurrect" one is clearly wrong.

The O and the K in the word okay are the first two letters of the word. The use of "Ok" is a colloquial form of the proper word.

The OED notes that the oldest written reference to "OK" comes from the American Presidential election of 1840. During that year, the Democratic Party was attempting to get then President Martin Van Buren re-elected. Van Buren had the nickname "Old Kinderhook," given to him for his birthplace in New York. Van Buren's supporters formed the OK Club, and this seems to have popularized the term, OK. Unfortunately, there is no clear indication how "Ok" became "Okay," there acceptable spelling used today.
