AM stands for Anti Meridian and PM stands for Post Meridian. They are Spanish words.

They're abbreviations of two Latin expressions:
In reference to time, AM and PM mean before or after noon. AM stands for Ante Meridiem, the Latin phrase for before noon. PM stand for Post Meridiem, the Latin for after noon.
Using the 24 hour clock system, then 1 pm is 13.00, and 2 pm is 14.00.
PM in time stands for "Post Meridiem" and refers to "after noon" in 12 hour clock. The "meridiem" is when the sun reaches its zenith (theortically at noon) and post means after.

On a 24 hour clock, it's pm. On a twelve hour clock, it could be either.

A twelve hour clock has 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12 and is the standard form time clock. A 24 hour clock has times starting at 1-12, but after it will start with 13 as 1 p.m. all the way to 24 or 00 as 12 midnight.

Habit, and convention. We all have to speak the same language if we're going to communicate. Personally, I prefer the 24 hour clock; so 1 PM is 13:00, and 9 PM is 21:00. Of course, I did spend 21 years in the Navy, and we used the 24-hour clock exclusively. But for talking to civilians in the US, you have to use the 12 hour clock with AM and PM.
