many years ago in the navy on the old style ships, if you where found stealing you where sent for a lashing with cat of nine tails (a whip with 9 ends). when whipping the theaf, they would do so many lashings from one side and then so many from the other side. this would create a checked patten on their back. So the next time that sailer went to another ship then they others will know of his checked past.
