A legend is a story, often originally a true or historical story, which has been adapted, usually through many oral retellings, to conform to the conventions hardwired into our brains about how stories should be told. The action will be boiled down to a few major characters, events which took place over a long time will take place in a day, the hero becomes more heroic, his achievements are exaggerated, and anything that happens more than once happens three times. These are examples of the kinds of changes that are made when a true story becomes a legend.
