I say that the key to a good essay is the tone. Essays in an "I mean business" tone tend to become boring. When I write an essay, I try to use a tone that is more like the way I talk. I also use a lot of analogies to make whatever idea I'm expressing more fun to explain and more fun to read. If you were a teacher and you had to grade x amount of essays, you would probably be pretty darn bored. An essay that has a more fun tone and filled with analogies sticks out in a teacher's mind as captivating and entertaining as well as informational.
